Publisher Description

“Black people are not dark-skinned white people,” says advertising visionary Tom Burrell. In fact, they are a lot more.

They are survivors of the Middle Passage and centuries of humiliation and deprivation, who have excelled against the odds, constantly making a way out of “no way!” At this point in history, the idea of black inferiority should have had a “Going-Out-of-Business Sale.” After all, Barack Obama has reached the Promised Land.

Yet, as Brainwashed: Erasing the Myth of Black Inferiority testifies, too much of black America is still wandering in the wilderness. In this powerful examination of “the greatest propaganda campaign of all time”—the masterful marketing of black inferiority Burrell poses 10 provocative questions that will make black people look in the mirror and ask why, nearly 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, so many blacks still think like slaves.

Brainwashed is not a reprimand; it is a call to deprogram ourselves of self-defeating attitudes and actions. Racism is not the issue; how we respond to racism is the issue. We must undo negative brainwashing and claim a new state of race-based self-esteem and self-actualization. Provocative and powerful, Brainwashed dares to expose the wounds so that we, at last, can heal.

Gain Understanding

The dynamics of colour in the US is laid out and explained in this multilayered text. The complications of a complicated issue is well documented from the historical beginning to present day, with tangible solutions for the individual, a family, a community, and, dare I say, the nation that orchestrates it all. Thank you Mr. Burrell for the lesson and showing all of us the role we play.

Remember the call to action

The most important part of this book is the final chapter because from there it escapes the bounding of just being a dead set of words and jumps into YOUR reality … into YOUR present … into YOUR right now. Think differently and live fully like it calls us to.

An Open Conversation

A memorable read with real-world problem-solving. Mr. Burrell captured the crisis in the African American community by decoding all of the imagery that surrounds our community. The negativity, the coonery, the “backstabbing and crabbing” all have a historical origin. I would suggest this book be read by any African American person who wants to change their community or better yet change themselves. I enjoyed this book and the refreshing approach to religion, comedy, media, and slave oriented cultural folkways, and mores. Buy this book.
